I remember it like it was yesterday…

It was 11:30 at night, and I had just come home. My mother sat across the kitchen table from me, crying. She was eating. And as she kept eating and eating, she shared with me her discouragement. How she just couldn’t do it any more. How the weight had finally won.

“I didn’t want to feel angry, but I was mad that she was giving up.”

As a young man I thought “just stop eating!” I realize now that at the time, I didn’t have the level of compassion or maturity to comprehend the struggle she had experienced her whole adult life. This struggle was at the root of her pain.

Over the next five years I watched her health steadily decline.

I wish I could tell you this story had a happy ending. I wish I could tell you she somehow found the strength and the answer she needed to take care of herself.

I wish I could tell you there was a magical, fairy-tale ending to this. I wish there was a pill or a revolutionary treatment that could help people like my mother who struggle more with what goes on on the inside than what appears on the outside.

In less than 5 years, at the youthful age of just 61, she was gone.
“I Couldn’t Comprehend What I Was Feeling”

When I received word she was gone, I went into shock. How could she be gone? What do you mean she’s no longer breathing? This was NOT how I had envisioned my life turning out. I felt numb inside. I didn’t cry, I didn’t react, I didn’t grieve.

She was the light of our family, the glue that kept us all together and now she was gone.

For me, one of the hardest parts of all this was what happened in the waning 6 months before she died. From my perspective, it seemed as if she just gave up on everything in much the same way as she had 5 years earlier. I became increasingly angry as it appeared she didn’t have any fight left insider her. How could she do this to us? Doesn’t she love us?

My Mother’s Death Set My Heart on a Mission

On various levels, my siblings and I knew my mother wasn’t as happy as she wished she could have been. Her struggle with weight was a constant battle. She kept fighting to lose the same 75 to 100 pounds year in and year out. When she had achieved some wieght loss, the pressure she felt to lose weight initially had decreased and she’d reward herself with “just a bite” of something decadent. But with that single bite, came another, and another, and the feelings of self loathing, the condemnation, the fears of never being enough or being loved came right back. Yet again, we’d see her self-sabotage what she truly wanted. And the yo-yo cycle would begin again.

My mother’s death affected me deeply–as it would for anyone–but it caused me to begin a quest. I needed answers. I knew she loved all of us and would do ANYTHING in the world for her family. But if that was true, then why didn’t she seem to have any motivation towards the end? It just didn’t add up, so I delved into learning why she did what she did.

As I sought more answers to her story, I discovered and shared my findings with other women and the insights began producing MASSIVE results for the women I worked with. Not surprisingly, the same things my mother struggled with emotionally were shared by what I began to realize as an ever growing population of women across the globe.

I began to see a connection between their increasing responsibilities in society, their overwhelming stress levels and the snowballing statistics for overweight and obese women.

As a result of multiple “ah-ha” moments, I took massive action to become a certified personal trainer and nutritionist so that I could develop a non-judgmental environment where women could exercise, seek nutritional insight and find emotional support without having to go to an intimidating gym or try to exercise alone at home.

Working with Women Opened My Eyes and Helped Me See My Own Mother in a New Light

After working with dozens of my first clients, I began to see some common themes and patterns of behavior that mirrored very similar things my mother experienced. I saw that these women believed:

  • That food is more powerful than they are
  • They hate what they see in the mirror – how could they have ever let it go this far?
  • They have no self-control around food
  • They eat when they aren’t hungry – for reasons of control, comfort or excitement
  • They feel like a failure, like they’re not good enough
  • They feel guilt and shame even when they DID put themselves first to go exercise or go on another diet

Suddenly I began to see my mother in a whole new light. It wasn’t about her love for me. She didn’t choose to leave me and our family. In many ways, she felt absolutely powerless and truly helpless. She tried her best to lose weight for decades, but deep down inside feared there was no way she would win.

Many of the women I have worked with felt the same way. Maybe you do too. It’s after years and years of failure at losing weight that we pile those experiences, one on top of another, ’til it becomes so overwhelming that we take on disempowering beliefs that allow us to “give up”.

My mother’s belief was “My metabolism is broken.” While other’s beliefs may be, “I’m just big boned.” “I’ve tried everything.” or “My family has horrible genetics.”

Get Off The Dieting Treadmill

You have been told all your life that the solution for your weight is to just stop eating. Easy right? Just exercise. Only eat the “right” foods. Eat less calories than you burn each day. That has been the strategy that’s been preached to you all your life. Simple arithmetic.

So you jump on the dieting treadmill, or you tried to find the “perfect combination” of the right foods and exercises that will magically help you lose weight but in as little time as possible.

Almost everyone, when they start a new “program” goes through the same emotional and physical cycle:

Anticipation and Hope

When you start a new diet you are typically filled with hope. “This is it! I’m sick and tired of feeling this way and it’s got to stop. I just want to get this weight loss thing DONE!”

Early Success

As you make progress on your new program, your body responds and you lose some initial weight. “It’s working” you think, and it is–but not in the way that is sustaining. Any time you restrict calories while increasing activity, you spike the acidity level within your body and it in turn responds with flushing this toxicity. What you experience is “water weight loss”.

You continue to restrict calories and you send the message to your body that there are seasons of feast and there are seasons of famine and this is the latter. It adapts by burning sugars or even muscle tissue because they are more easily converted into an energy source compared to body fat.

So over time, you lose weight until you hit a plateau, feeling exhausted and weak, you become unglued emotionally…

Losing Grip

This is where the rubber meets the road.

After a while on your “program,” you begin to lose your edge. You can’t seem to ward off the cravings any more. Your weight loss stalls. Maybe a personal crisis arises or some other stress gets overwhelming and dieting becomes the one pain you CAN control and you justify that it is just too hard “right now.”

Gaining Weight and Giving Up

Because of your own ineffective strategy, you just can’t resist the cravings, and you begin to gain back the weight. Your fears of not being discipline or strong enough to remain on a diet are reinforced by your lack of will power over food. Once you have started gaining weight back, you eventually give up and on come the rationalizing and limiting beliefs. It was just too hard. There was just too much going on in your life. You feel guilty, defeated and utterly lost.

And after that, you are likely to gain back all the weight you have lost and maybe even then some.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention show that at any given time, roughly 75+ million Americans are dieting, with 71.3 million of them being unsuccessful. That’s a mere 5% success rate for those that take the weight off and KEEP it off.

According to a University of California, Los Angeles study, “up to two-thirds of those on a diet regain more weight than when they started”.
